Sheba Sahlemariam

imageI was first introduced to Sheba Sahlemariam on blackisbeautiful.se. Sheba Sahlemariam, who is a singer, was born in Addis, Ethiopia and raised in Africa, Europe, New York City, and the Caribbean. When I first saw the video, I instantly appreciated her unique style in music and fashion.
"My process is simple: I try to make music I would like to listen to. I let go and let God and try to hear what the muses have to say to me. I think the best way to way to be creative is to remember why I do it in the first place and then allow myself to enjoy the ride," -

Peanut Butter Bonbons Recipe

Peanut Butter Bonbons Recipe at Cooking.comI found this recipe at Cooking.com, which would be great to try. I was originally looking for a vegan alternative, which I will post soon. As always, it's better to eat foods in moderation. So if you have a sweet tooth, then you will enjoy these peanut butter bonbons.
*You can make substitutions with the ingredients; if you have peanut allergies, avoid using peanut butter.
1/2 cup butter, softened (You can use vegan butter as an alternative or coconut oil)
1/2 cup chunky peanut butter (be sure to watch the sodium and sugar content; avoid high fructose corn syrup)
3/4 cup packed brown sugar
1/4 teaspoon baking soda
1 egg
1 1/2 teaspoons vanilla
2 1/2 cups all-purpose flour
One 12-ounce package semisweet chocolate pieces or organic chocolate pieces
2 teaspoons of butter ( You can use vegan butter or coconut oil)
In a large mixing bowl beat the butter and peanut butter with an electric mixer on medium to high speed for 30 seconds. Add the brown sugar and baking soda; beat till combined. Beat in the egg and vanilla. Beat in as much of the flour as you can with the mixer. Stir in any remaining flour with a wooden spoon.

Shape dough into 1-inch balls. Place balls 1 1/2 inches apart on ungreased cookie sheets.

Bake in a preheated 350 degrees F oven for 8 to 10 minutes, or till cookies are set and lightly browned on the bottom. Remove cookies from pan and cool on a rack.

In a medium, heavy saucepan heat chocolate and  over low heat till melted. Cool slightly. Using a fork, dip peanut butter balls, one at a time, into chocolate mixture to coat. Transfer to waxed paper lined cookie sheets. Chill till firm. Store in a cool place.

Taliah Waajid's Black Earth Products- Protective Mist Bodifier

The Protective Mist Bodifier is truly amazing! It's a daily conitioning and moisturizing spray that doesn't leave product build-up or residue. I found some of Taliah Waajid's Black Earth Products ( Protective Mist Bodifier, African Healing Oyl, and Lock It Up) a few months ago at my local CVS store. Unfortunantly, the store stopped carrying the Bodifier, but I don't mind ordering it.
Ever since I started using the Bodifier, detangling my hair has become so much easier. The whole hair process for me takes hours, since I do my own hair. After I wash my hair, I apply the Bodifier. I usually keep a spray bottle on hand; it helps to keep your hair drenched with water. My comb glides through my hair effortlessly.
When you first look at the Protective Mist Bodifier, it looks more like a cream or gel, but it's a liquid. It has a nice scent, and is great for natural hair styles, and even relaxed hair.
It also has some nice ingredients:
Pure Distilled Water, Wheat Germ, Indian Hemp, Olive Oil, Balsam, Aloe Vera, Bee Pollen, Silk Protein, Bay Laurel, Fruit Bio-Flavonoids, Ancient African Herbal Formula.
The product retails for $7.00 for 8 oz. and $20.00 for 32 oz.

Dmitry's Closet by Latrivia S. Nelson

Dmitry's Closet Book Cover
If you are looking for a great fictional read, then look no further! Dmitry's Closet by Latriva S. Nelson is filled with romance, drama, suspence, and mystery. The story is well planned, with relatable characters, creating a plot that will keep you guessing until the very end.
The story takes place in Memphis, TN. Royal Stone, an orphan, meets Russian millionaire Dmyitry Medlov while searching for a job. He offers her a job running his upscale boutique. They develop a working friendship. Dmitry starts to lavish Royal with expensive gifts as his interest in her grows. Their friendship soon blossoms into a romantic relationship. Royal, however, does not know that Dmitry is a crime boss, the head of the notorious Medlov Organized Crime Family. As Dmitry starts to make the transition to leave organized crime behind, someone from his past emerges that threatens everything that he has built, including his relationship with Royal. Their love is tested when Royal finds out Dmitry's true identity. Will she leave, risking his love, or will she stay and risk her life?
I wish I could add more, but that would spoil everything!

Be sure to read the sequel to Dmitry's Closet entitled Dmitry's Royal Flush: Rise of the Queen.

Quest for the Infamous Red Lipstick

(Red Lipstick for Black Women- IvolveBeauty.com)

I wanted to be adventurous and try something new with my makeup. I decided to try red lipstick! There are so many choices, but it is honestly hard trying to find the right shade of red.

Lipsticks that I'm looking forward to try:
Aphrodite and Xenia in the DeVine Goddess Lipstick Collection by Napoleon Perdis both look promising. They are both vibrant and creamy, but I am still debating on whether to spend $22.00 for the lipsticks. However, I recently checked out Napoleon Perdis' NP Set Collection at Target. The Madrid Matte Bright Red looks great. It retails for $15.00.
Red Ruby by PurMinerals is infused with shea butter and minerals. It is a blue based and is a dark rich red color. This lipstick retails for $16.00.
Radiant Red by Fashion Fair is creamy and rich, with a blue base. It retails for $15.00.
Hemp Organics has some nice shades of lipsticks that are supposed to be made with mostly organic ingredients. They actually have several shades of red lipstick that vary in tone. These include Garnet, Sienna, Red Zin, Ruby, Red Earth, Cayenne, and Crimson. They retail for $14.99 at PureBodySolutions.com and $11.92 at LuckyVitamin.com, which features their lip tints as well.

There's also MAC Cosmetics's MAC Red for $14.50, Russian Red, and Ruby Woo.

Poppy Love ULTRA Color Rich Lipstick by Avon is a great moisturizing lipstick, but it is more reddish orange or coral.

Red 2000 ULTRA Color Rich Lipstick is also by Avon. It has a blue base. The ULTRA Color Rich Lipsticks retail between $6.50 and $6.99.

Iman Red by Iman Cosmetics is long wearing and has long lasting rich color. It has a blue base. It retails for $8.99.

b.l.a.c. minerals

When I began searching for mineral makeup, I ran across B.l.a.c. Minerals. They provide a nice selection of products for women of color.
I had to try their eyeshadows (Eye Pigments), which are terrific. I can tell you that the colors are highly pigmented, versatile, and have lasted for several months.

Below are some of the colors that I've tried.

The B.l.a.c. Minerals Eye Pigments retail for $10.00 each, which is a great buy, considering they last a long time (I have had my eyeshadows for over a year). They come in 21 different shades and are great to have in your makeup kit. I've also used some of the Passion as a lip gloss, by mixing it with some lip balm.
Check out http://www.blacminerals.com/

P.S. Their sample sizes are awesome. I've ordered Carnival (vibrant gold color), Tease (shimmery beige color), Sunrise, Sunset, and Royal (deep blue color) eyeshadow samples, along with the Raisin, Red Clay, and Apricot blush samples. They come in a small bag. If you have any leftover loose eyeshadow containers, then you can pour these eyeshadows into the old containers. You should have enough eyeshadow or blush to last for at least 5 applications. My samples have lasted longer.

A single eyeshadow sample is $2.25, while a set of 5 retails for $9.50. Blush samples retail for $2.25 each. You can also try their foundation and setting powder and body shimmers.

Ginger + Liz Colour Collection

Ginger + Liz Colour Collection
I must admit that I haven't worn traditional nail polish, except for your basic base and top coat, since working in a restaurant; nail polish is considered to be a saftety hazard in many establishments if you are handling food. When I where it now, I mix loose mineral eyeshadow with a clear coat; this is an alternative to using regular nail polish. It's one thing when you smell the fumes while painting your nails in your bedroom, but it's another if someone else smells it all the way down the hall.
I was actually turned on to the Ginger + Liz Colour Collection when reading the May 2010 issue of Ebony magazine. The creators are H. Ginger Johnson and S. Liz Pickett, who started out with 10 colors and no have more than 20 shades to choose from. Their line features classic, fun, flirty, yet glamorous colors that retail for $12.00 each. The best part is that their whole collection is non-toxic and vegan-friendly!

Chrisette Michele

These are two of my favorite videos from the fabulous Chrisette Michele. She is a singer and songwriter. Her voice is absolutely beautiful.
Albums: I Am (2007), Epiphany (2009), and Let Freedom Reign- slated to be released on November 30th.

She has a soulful voice that is powerful, raw, and heartfelt, no matter what she sings.

Are You Ruled By Your Hair?

June 16, 2009 — Music video by India.Arie performing I Am Not My Hair. (C) 2006 Motown Records, a Division of UMG Recordings, Inc.

This is a powerful song. We shouldn't limit ourselves to just one attribute, especially if it's physical, but we should embrace the total package. Of course, we all have individual characteristics that we or someone else might adore, yet we shouldn't focus on being narcissistic.

What can you say about having hair? Some days when I wake up, I can't wait to style my hair. If I am in a funky mood or just in a hurry, I go to my backup plan- my assorted collection of wigs. They have saved me numerous times, considering that I don't have relaxed hair. I can change up my style any time.

Hair is a physical attribute that has its highs and lows. It's all about your attitude. I have seen beautiful people with and without hair. It's all about preference. I do know that people without hair do not have to worry about the same things as those of us who do. I've also known people who are completly obsessed with their hair; they couldn't do anything without slinging, touching, or lovingly admiring themselves- mainly their hair- in a mirror.

Personally, I know my hair's limitations. There are certain styles that I wouldn't even attempt to tackle. I know what I like and don't like. I can honestly say that there have been times where I considered cutting off all of my hair, much to the displeasure of my family and friends. For now, I am satisfied and thankful for what I do have.

Most of us are aware of the debate regarding natural vs. relaxed hair. I won't get into it right now, but it's all about choices. I believe that you should wear your hair any way that you want; it's your decision. You should be aware of the pros and cons in any decision that you make, whether about your hair, your body, what you eat, etc.

Bottom line, JUST BE YOU.

Norma Kamali

Norma Kamali
Norma Kamali by ivolvebeauty on Polyvore.com

Norma Kamali has become one of my favorite designers. She is known for her poly jersey clothing, which can be worn in different styles.

I would describe many of her pieces as being classically chic, yet modern. The versatile pieces take you from day to evening, from casual to dressy attire, with the help from the right accessories.

For many of us who want to have designer fashions, but on a budget, check out her collection at Walmart.

Style 2010

Style 2010 by ivolvebeauty featuring filigree jewelry

These are some of my favorite pieces. It's always great to splurge in moderation...treat yourself every now and then. I usually pay more for essential items, usually anything that can be worn with the majority of items within my wardrobe over a long period of time (classic pieces). I always spend less on items that are seasonal.

Making Botanical Perfumes

Making Botanical Perfumes

Many people may not know this, but usually most fragrances are synthetically derived. Personally, I know that certain fragrances, even though they may smell good, irritate my sinuses. No wonder so many people find it necessary to use products that are fragrance free.

The link above is featured in the newsletter from MountainRoseHerbs.com. They offer bulk herbs & spices, carrier oils, teas, vegetable butters ( shea, cocoa, mango, etc.), essential oils, herbal extracts, castile soap, tinctures, and other cosmetic-making ingredients. Many of their products are organic. The article features different recipes on how to make your own natural fragrances.

After spending eleven years in prison, the innocent comes to collect a debt and is determined to have the life he was promised... by any means necessary.

Natural Beauty Recipes & Tips

Lemon-Sugar Face & Body Scrub
2 to 4 tablespoons of lemon juice
1/4 cup of sugar (white or brown)
1/4 to 1/2 cup of your favorite carrier oil ( sesame, olive, sweet almond, etc.) or water(depending on desired consistency)
(1) bowel or container
Place sugar in a bowel or container and add lemon juice. Add water and mix together ( for a thinner mixture use more water; for a thicker mixture use less water).
Apply to damp skin using upward motion. If applying to the face use gentle care around the eye area. Once dry, rinse off and pat the skin dry using a towel.
*For sensitive or dry skin use less lemon juice.
*Use brown sugar for a softer scrub
*You can substitute water for your favorite body oil (shea butter, olive oil, sweet almond oil, etc.)

Colloidal Oatmeal
Colloidal oatmeal (ground oats) is great for softer and smoother skin. It is excellent for dry skin. Mix this with your choice of water, milk, or honey and apply to your face, being careful around the eye area. Wait 5 to 10 minutes before rinsing off and pat dry.

Natural Makeup Remover
Use olive oil to remove your makeup. Apply the olive oil liberally to your skin and take a warm, damp face towel to gently remove your makeup. This is also effective in cleansing your skin, while moisturizing at the same time.
*Use organic olive oil, if possible, or regular extra-virgin olive oil

Facial Moisturizer
You can use any one of these oils to naturally moisturize your skin. You only need to apply a small amount.
Sweet Almond Oil                                  Coconut Oil                                           Jojoba Oil
Olive Oil (extra-virgin)
