This is just to give you an update to my latest craft. I am grateful to announce that my eyeshadows are now listed on Etsy! It has taken plenty of research, but I'll give you the details below.

IvolveBeauty product features:

As far as the formula, I wanted to keep the ingredients simple, so there are no parabens (preservatives), talc, bismuth oxychloride, chemical dyes, or harmful ingredients. My products are cruelty free, and most of the eyeshadows will be vegan (these items will be labeled). Since there are minimal ingredients, the eyeshadows are concentrated, allowing for more pigmentation.

Vegan Information: I use carmine (a natural red pigment derived from cochineal) in some products, but not all. Items that include carmine will be labeled as non-vegan.

The eyeshadows are arranged by collection: Neutral Eye Collection and Bold Eye Collection (more collections may be added). You can use them dry or wet (simply wet an eyeshadow brush).

I just watched Hidden America: Children of the Plains on ABC's 20/20 with Diane Sawyer. This was touching, informative, monumental and unexpected-mainly because it was shown on mainstream media.

When I saw the previews for it, I made sure to watch it because rarely do you see or hear anything concerning American Indians today, unless it's in regards to some Hollywood western movie. I've been out of high school for five years, and remember that their was little relevance to America's first inhabitants. I learned that if you really want to learn something, then read as much as you can, investigate for yourself, and don't go half-cocked based off of what someone else has said. American history books are loaded with misconceptions, but that's another story.

It's vital to recognize that we are all a part of a common circle; we share this Earth having more similarities than differences. No matter who you are, or where you come from, just take the time out to learn from and help someone else. We all need someone to pull us up in times of need and laugh with in times of joy.

Latest Craft: Mineral Eyeshadows

I know it's been a while since I've posted, but I've been working hard. I decided to start making cosmetics- mainly eyeshadows, partly because I work around it, and I just wanted to see what would happen. This has definitely been a challenge, even though I have not dedicated as much time as I would like to my new endeavor.

So, what does making cosmetics entail:

1.) Research- You need to research which ingredients you want to use. Formulating cosmetics, or anything for that matter is challenging, but the simpler the ingredients the better.

2.) Have a concept- What products do you want to carry or make? You need to determine what are the key features of your products.

3.) Actually making the product- Since I use basic ingredients, I have to grind everything together quite a bit. I've had to play around with colors, mixing until I get a certain shade. I've ended up with shades that I didn't like, but it's trial and error. Having a color wheel is vital in understanding color theory.

4.) The details- This includes price points, marketing, packaging, etc. I'm still determining this, so bare with me.

In the mean time, I'll leave you with some pictures.

Isis Brantley's TSA Hair Check: Her Afro Was Suspicious

Ms. Isis Brantley is an exceptional professional hairstylist from Dallas, TX, who specializes in natural hair. She is noted for styling Erykah Badu's notorious looks, among others.

Recently, while flying from Atlanta's Hartsfield-Jackson International Airport to Dallas, she was stopped by a TSA agent so that her hair could be searched, which she was wearing in a full afro. She is familiar to searches, but this search was more in depth. If she didn't submit to the search, she would miss her flight. After agreeing to the search, she referenced the agent to "digging" around in her hair to search for potential weapons, which were not found.

I know that certain precautions have to be made, but this is going a bit far. I understand that Ms. Brantley's hair style was large and full. I seldom know of any woman who would somehow artistically strap a weapon or deadly device within their hairstyle- simply because most women are picky about their hair. Some people would be crazy to do this, but I don't know of any Black woman that would. It's precious territory.

I guess if you wear your hair in a curly hair style or as anything other than straight, then it's considered suspicious. Oh, and if you have locs (dreadlocks) be prepared to be searched.

High End Mascaras- Benefit, Lorac, Urban Decay, Buxom, Dior & More

I have worked around several brands of makeup- most of them are fairly expensive. This includes Iman Cosmetics- which is very affordable, Urban Decay, Lorac, Paula Dorf, Bare Escentuals, Too Faced, Laura Geller, Smashbox, Sue Devitt, and more. When you incorporate tax, I can fill my car up to at least half if I were to purchase just one tube of mascara (I think the current price of unleaded gas in my area is around $3.37). With the way some people shop for makeup, you wouldn't think there was a recession.

If you are wondering why I don't write as often about makeup, then here's why:
I'm the type of person that when I'm around something all day several times a week, I don't want to be bothered by it when I go home- unless I'm in one of my sporadic moods. This is usually energized by me wanting to educate myself. If I get an "ah-ha" moment, then I will delve deep into something, but this is usually when I look up products that I don't work around. I am writing this post because I want to provide my opinion and information that will be valuable to anyone that chooses to read this.

I'll be honest. Since I work in a retail environment, sometimes I have to point people to certain brands- typically the higher end brands. This doesn't necessarily mean that these brands are better than drug store brands, it simply comes down to profits, mainly because I'm provided training so that I can pass along what I know to customers.

There are only a few cosmetic lines where I actually and completely adore the products. MAC is great, but I haven't had too much experience in working with their products, products by Clinique or Lancome. There isn't one ideal brand that I think is absolutely fabulous. I usually have favorite "items" that I pick from within each brand. I find that whenever one brand comes out with a new product, another brand comes out with a similar item.
**Please note that my opinion my change as I dedicate more time to researching and studying different product lines. I don't claim to know everything, but I do enjoy learning as much as I can.

Below are just a few mascaras that I've either been exposed to, or have heard good reviews about. These are the higher end brands. I'll do a later post on some lower end- more affordable brands. Each mascara is different. Some contain fibers, polymers, or conditioners.

Lancome DEFINICILS- High Definition Mascara in Black, Deep Black, Brown, and Deep Brown- $25.00

Great for: Definition and Separation. Fragrance-free.

Benefit recently launched their They're Real mascara. It's currently sold in jet black and retails for $22.00.

It comes with a specially designed brush. Below are the ingredients:

I won't lie; this mascara is good, but there are other contenders.

Lorac Multiplex 3D Lashes Volumizing & Thickening Mascara- $22.00

It comes in black with a custom curved brush. It's similar to the Urban Decay Supercurl mascara. The formula is conditioning, with it being safe for contact lens wearers. The formula is non-clumping.

Ingredients:

Even though it's a curling mascara, it's overall great for length and definition. The curved brush is similar to the Multiplex 3D mascara by Lorac (above).

Latest Books: The Grunt and The Ugly Girlfriend by Latrivia S. Nelson

If you are like me, reading a book can shape your whole day. I've read to the point where I have a mini library with shelves packed full of books ranging from fiction to nonfiction, mysteries, dramas, history, romance, poetry, and economics. Learning is one of the greatest abilities in life, and reading goes along with it.

So I'll take a few moments to share with you two of the latest books I have read. Both books are by best selling author Latrivia S. Nelson. She has written many interracial romance novels. You can credit her for Ivy's Twisted Vine, The Medlov Crime Family Series- Dmitry's Closet, Dmitry's Royal Flush: Rise of The Queen, Anatoly Medlov: Complete Reign, and Saving Anya (upcoming), and also The Chronicles of Young Dmitry Medlov (series). She is also known for The Lonely Heart Series, which includes The Ugly Girlfriend, Finding Opa!, and The Grunt.

Let me start off with The Grunt. One of the reasons why I enjoyed reading this book is because the story is told from mostly a male's perspective.The lead character- Brett Black- is a Recon Marine who has to cope from one circumstance to another fairly quickly revolving around what he discovers about his wife (who was seriously trifling). Life really throws him through a couple of loops when she leaves him and their son, so he is forced to deal with the events that unfold afterwards. He finds relief and comfort in Courtney Lawless who is caring and compassionate. Their relationship becomes stronger after she agrees to become a live-in nanny for his son, but they are tested because of who Courtney is- she happens to be the Lieutenant Colonel's daughter and her brother is the Captain.

I truly enjoyed the pace, but the ending left me wanting to read more (in a good way). In our society you often read or hear about single mothers, but rarely do you read about single fathers, let alone single fathers in the military.

The second book review is about The Ugly Girlfriend. I know I'm late in reviewing it, since this is the first book in The Lonely Heart Series, but I'm just glad that I finally read it. I happen to do things differently sometimes. I love that Mrs. Nelson always tackles a different topic in each of her books. How many times do we deny ourselves because of our own insecurities? Well, LaToya Jenkins is no exception. Compared to her friends, she is the odd one out, especially when it comes to men. Even though she is a successful entrepreneur, she doesn't completely see her worth, simply because she isn't society's ideal size- she is considered plus size. Everything gradually changes when she meets recently divorced Mitch O'Keefe, who becomes her client. They both overcome their personal issues as they find that they are good for one another.

I give both books two thumbs up. I'll probably reread the books when I get some free time, since I always seem to learn something new about the characters. It's similar to watching a good movie again and again, until I know every scene by heart. Any book that Mrs. Nelson writes is guaranteed to be exceptional. I didn't hear about this from my local news or mainstream media (as of yet), but from a family member. The headline didn't surprise me, but it did lead me to question where were the parents because they are also at fault. It stems from a group of white teenagers driving from their town after a late party, to Jackson, Mississippi with the intent to find a black victim- which is basically premeditated. You can watch the video below for the details.

I pray for the family of Mr. James Anderson in hopes that they will attain justice.

Anything can happen when it comes to baking. I started early in the morning so that I could be better prepared if something didn't go satisfactory, but everything went extremely well. I absolutely enjoy baking, but it has taken much effort, and plenty of trial and error.

Handmade Feather Earrings!

In my endeavor to harness my creativity (which I need to implement more), I decided to start off making something not too difficult. I've learned that it's best to gradually build on, than tackle something strenuous because my patience isn't always the best- if something is too challenging I'll either stop what I'm doing or procrastinate. In any case I usually procrastinate.

I do realize that feather earrings have been around for a few years, but they are hard to find unless you know the right spots to shop depending on the city. If I happen to find any, they're either too small, or just bland. So I found a solution- making the earrings myself!

I picked up some feathers from Hancock Fabrics and some earring and jewelry components. I bought some items from Wal-Mart's craft section, but you can also check Michael's. Earring components, especially for sensitive ears, can be a bit trickier to find. When I went to one store they were sold out, so I had to shop around. You'll also need jewelry making tools- pliers, crimps, etc.

Recently, I was asked to do a review by one of my favorite authors, for which I am grateful and honored. Latrivia S. Nelson is truly a gem. I'm an avid reader (at least I like to think I am). I was first introduced to this author while browsing one of my favorite sites- Amazon.com a few years ago. At that time she had released her first novel- Ivy's Twisted Vine. After reading the synopsis, I was intrigued and purchased the novel, which is pretty lengthy, so you will definitely have plenty to read. The upcoming sequel is entitled The World In Reverse. I was fascinated by her writing style because the stories that she tells are very relatable. I was floored when she released The Medlov Crime Family Series. It includes Dmitry's Closet, Dmitry's Royal Flush: Rise of the Queen, and Anatoly Medlov: Complete Reign. The final sequel -Saving Anya- will be released later this year. The series also features short stories (ebooks) that chronicle the early life of the dangerously sexy mob boss Dmitry Medlov.

How do you cope with losing someone you love? Two people from different backgrounds share firsthand knowledge of what it's like to lose and live without their beloved spouse. Both have struggled to cope with their grief, knowing that a part of themselves has been lost. Stacey, a successful black author who lost her husband, is struggling to write her next novel. Hunter, a Greek OB/GYN, runs a thriving family practice with his sister. Jumping The Broom movie

I recently had the pleasure of viewing Jumping The Broom at the local movie theater. I seldom go to the theaters simply because there aren't many movies that I would actually want to see. If it's a comedy, then the jokes (based on the movie trailer) are too corny. Each year there seems to be a horror film, but sometimes they all have similar story lines- there's screaming, something lurking in the darkness, maybe a bit of bloodshed, and more screaming. Hollywood appears to be reviving the whole Marvel Comic book genre, possibly because the characters are familiar. There's action, less dialogue, and more effects. I find that if you desire true original films, then don't necessarily look to Hollywood. You have independent filmmakers, film festivals, and numerous individuals working in order to tell meaningful stories. I have also found that some of the best films aren't shown in theaters- but that's another post.

Getting back to Jumping The Broom...

The film has a terrific cast-

Remembering the Freedom Riders

Today I was fortunate to watch Oprah's show, and I must say it was inspirational. Her show chronicled the historic journey of the Freedom Riders during the Civil Rights era. The first freedom ride took place on May 4, 1961. The ride was to take the activists from Washington, D.C. to New Orleans, LA. Many of the rides were organized by C.O.R.E (Congress of Racial Equality).

These individuals possessed a bravery that few people will ever demonstrate. They sacrificed their lives for the sake of equality and justice. We each have to stand up for a cause, but how many of us would be willing to give up our lives for someone else? Their self-less actions touched not only their generation, but is evidenced to this day. I've learned that it is necessary to learn who you are, how you can leave a positive presence on someone else, even people you do not know. I truly enjoy shopping for jewelry, especially when I find something unique that easily strikes up a conversation. It's fun to see someone admiring whatever I have on. So I've been researching some fun projects on youtube, the internet, in magazines, etc. I am always amazed at what people create, especially if it's simple. Below are some videos that demonstrate how to make these adorable treats, which involve very basic ingredients. Hopefully I will set aside the time to make these and post some pictures later on.

The ingredients usually involve: candy melt or melted chocolate, lollipop sticks (paper), a block of styrofoam, sprinkles for decoration, plain cupcakes or cake ( you can prepare a cake from any variety of cake mixes), cream cheese or regular frosting, and your imagination.

If you are looking to try something fun, then making some delicious margarita cupcakes will do the trick.

I enjoy baking as much as possible, even though it definitely takes time, effort, and persistence. I wanted to try something festive, and voila!

Rest assured, you will not get drunk from eating a few; you barely taste the tequila, which is an essential ingredient in this recipe. The cheaper the tequila, the better.

These cupcakes have a nice lemon-lime taste, with a tequila frosting, sprinkled with coarse sea salt. Basically, you will have a very refreshing balance of sweetness with a hint of salty flavor.

I've included a video showing how to make these, which helped me tremendously. The chef -Alina Eisenhauser of Sweet (an upscale pastry shop and dessert bar located in Worcestor, MA) - is great at making this recipe easy to follow.

Makes 12 Jumbo Cupcakes

Ingredients

For the Cupcakes

1½ cups all purpose flour
1 cup sugar
1½ tsp baking powder
½ tsp salt
4 oz (1 stick) unsalted butter, room temperature
½ cup sour cream
1 egg + 2 yolks, room temperature
1 tsp vanilla extract
1 tsp lime zest

For the Buttercream Frosting

8 oz (2 sticks) unsalted butter, room temperature
8 oz Crisco shortening
2 lbs confectioners. sugar
1 oz gold tequila
1 oz lime juice
2 tsp lime zest

Tequila Lime Syrup - equal parts of each ingredient:

⅓ simple syrup (equal parts sugar and water, heated on stove until sugar dissolves and then cooled to room temperature)
⅓ tequila
⅓ lemon juice

Garnish

sanding sugar
sea salt

Special Equipment

electric mixer
ice cream scoop
squeeze bottle
jumbo muffin tin
muffin liners

Favorite Inexpensive Makeup Brushes

I often comparison shop; this is essential when living within a budget. I ask myself- "Should I buy this item for $50.00, or can I get those two (less expensive) items for the same price?"- this is a constant question.

Makeup can be pretty expensive, but regardless it is essential to have the right tools. Cosmetic brushes are pretty pricey; name brand makeup artistry brushes can range from $15.00 per brush to over $40.00. When needing a full arsenal, or basic set- you do the math.

In the process of building my makeup kit, I've learned to be practical. It's always great to find items that can be used for multiple purposes.

It isn't always necessary to spend so much money on one particular item, unless it's that good. I've heard that MAC brushes are terrific. Personally, I wouldn't dare spend $28.00 for one brush- it would have to be pretty miraculous. I've learned that it is possible to find quality brushes- you just have to know where to look.

I have read of people using basic paint brushes from Michael's arts and crafts store as makeup brushes.

I have been fortunate to use brushes from Bare Minerals, Smashbox, Benefit Cosmetics, Urban Decay, and Too Faced- which are all great. I do have my favorites, which are mainly from Smashbox. Below are some inexpensive alternatives.

These brushes are soft, yet durable. They are synthetic, so they won't hold a considerable amount of bacteria compared to animal hair bristles- just as long as the brushes are cleaned regularly.
I LOVE the price. You can purchase this set for $30.00 or purchase separately for $3.00 each.

The regular e.l.f. brushes are good, but their Studio brushes are better.

2.) e.l.f. Mineral Brushes

They recently launched their Mineral Bamboo brushes, which retail for $5.00 each. These are made of taklon, which is said to be extremely soft, antibacterial, and 100% cruelty free.



3.) EcoTools Cosmetic Brush Set
     Price: $11.99- $16.99

This set includes a blush brush, concealer brush, eyeliner brush, lash/ brow brush, and a cosmetic case.
You can find this brand at various retailers, including ULTA, Walgreens, Wal-Mart, and Amazon.com.

4.) Studio Basics
   Price: Varies; Usually $2.99- $9.99+ (depending on retailer)

Studio Basics and EcoTools are both made by the same company- Paris Presents. Studio Basics brushes are pretty effective, depending on which brush is needed for certain applications.

I like the bronzer brush. You can use this for the face and body. It's also great for medium to full coverage powder or mineral makeup application.

I recently had the pleasure of visiting Longview, TX- mainly because I was on a mission to taste and experience the wonderful world of premium cupcakes by way of a cupcake eatery called Bake Cupcakes.

Bake Cupcakes is a wonderfully chic cupcakery that offers delicious gourmet cupcakes.

Here are the flavors we tried and loved...

1.) Red Velvet- a traditional red velvet cake with cream cheese frosting. This is my favorite version of this type of cupcake. I was glad that I could not taste any almond extract. Some people prefer the almond flavor, but I do not.

2.) Lemon- a nice, soft burst of lemon flavor that wasn't too overpowering.

3.) Black & White- a delicious chocolate cupcake with smooth vanilla frosting.

4.) Strawberries-N-Cream- a fresh burst of strawberry flavor and cream cheese frosting.

5.) Peanut Butter Cup- this tastes exactly as its name.

All of the cupcakes were moist. I absolutely love the cream cheese frosting, because it doesn't taste too sweet compared to regular frosting. I believe it gives the cupcake or any cake more flavor.

Let's get to the price. From what I have experienced, you can pay anywhere from $2.25 to $3.00 per cupcake depending on the establishment in each city.

Black & White

Bake Cupcakes is pretty reasonable at $2.50 per cupcake because their cupcakes are really that good. Their premium cupcakes are $2.75 each. You can give these as treats for any special occasion- birthdays, weddings, parties, office/ business gatherings, bridal showers, or just to say thank you. Or you can just have these to treat yourself weekly or daily.

They offer quite an array of flavors that include: German Chocolate, Italian Cream, Devil's Food, Banana Split, Bake Love, Confetti, Black Forest, Grandma's Birthday, Cookies-N-Cream, Double Vanilla, Pink Champagne, Chocolate Raspberry, The Elvis, Chocolate Peanut Butter, Key Lime, Coconut, and more.

Salmon with Vegetables

I enjoy doing several things in my spare time, one of which is cooking. From what I have learned, it is important to keep some sort of record- via recipe or photos- of what you have cooked to share with others.

Below is one of my favorite dishes. It's healthy and full of vegetables and protein.

Salmon with Spring Mix Salad, Cubed Sweet Potatoes, Regular Potatoes, Diced Red Bell Peppers & Onions, Black Beans & Corn, and Green Beans

I started cooking the salmon in olive oil. I then added some Bragg's seasoning, which gives excellent flavor. It's full of herbs and is absolutely salt-free.

Some of the herbs include: Rosemary, garlic, sage, parsley, thyme, etc.

This is great for anyone with a sodium-restricted diet. However, when cooking with frozen or fresh meats, be sure to check the ingredients, along with the sodium content.

You can add your favorite glaze to the salmon and vegetables.

Here are some ideas to making this dish using different glazes & sauces:
1.) Honey-Lemon - a mixture of lemon juice, honey, black pepper, olive oil, diced onions & garlic (or onion and garlic seasoning)
2.) Ranch (use any ranch dressing)
3.) Teriyaki sauce
4.) Bar-B-Que sauce

This is a picture of the finished dish to the right. You can add your favorite salad dressing or vinaigrette. I added some croutons, tomatoes, and shredded parmesan cheese.

To make it easier, I usually like to cook with frozen vegetables. Since it's frozen, you can keep it longer in your freezer, and not have to worry about cooking the food right away as with fresh produce, unless you are making salads, etc.

Always remember to have fun and enjoy what you create!

I apologize for the non-existent posts; I've been working like crazy. I just wanted to applaud author Latrivia S. Nelson for yet another outstanding book- Anatoly Medlov: Complete Reign, for which I am still reading. So far, I love the plot. I pre-ordered a copy of the book on her website (http://www.latrivianelson.info/), which will be released on January 31. She was wonderful to offer the ebook when purchasing the print edition.

You have to be extremely talented, for which she is, in order to write intriguing sequels back-to-back from the original. If you haven't read the Medlov Crime Family Series, then you should definitely look into it. Each book is well written, with interesting plots and characters.

The series consists of:

Dmitry's Royal Flush: Rise of The Queen
Anatoly Medlov: Complete Reign
and Saving Anya ( expected to be released in 2011)

I absolutely love the Medlov Crime Family Series.
